Apart from the VAARR being an incredible Augmented Reality reading device, my uncle also built into it a unique lookup database. Words for things he came across when he arrived in this realm were documented and remotely updated in its database enabling the user to type in the word which displays its meaning, or his interpretation of it. Indispensable really as some explanations come with a warning.

                                                                                                                          ============

I arrived at Villadors Edge outside a neon lit establishment named The Outbound Bar with wording underneath that I couldn’t quite read. Things smell fresher here and look cleaner and brighter but at the same time vague and unfamiliar. It appears to be a halfway place, a rambling vicinity with a scattering of buildings at the side of a superhighway that stretches into oblivion. It feels neither friendly nor intimidating. My primary objective is still to find my uncle. I can feel my heart is pounding with optimism.

The timestamps are no longer appearing on my posts. I’m wondering if I should be worried?

My VAARR is proving invaluable here. The definitions created by my uncle of words found here are entertaining to say the least. On my way here I noticed signs and imposing billboards at different places advertising Bulava. Typing this word into my VAARR returned: “In a nutshell don’t meddle with this stuff. It’ll propel you from zero to the speed of sound in less time than it takes to chalk a pool cue. Scary Stuff.” Wow I’m guessing they must be powering their vehicles on this stuff.

Speaking of vehicles, I noticed a parking lot outside The Outbound Bar had cars parked neatly in bays. Some of them were the most amazing examples of engineering imaginable. One in particular that caught my eye was a cool sapphire colour, shaped like a missile. Every square inch of it oozed ferocious stunning beauty and engineering excellence. My eyes wandered down to the aerodynamic wheel arches exposing sixty inch wheels that glittered like jewels.

‘Be careful if you go in there.’ the driver said nodding to the entrance of the bar as I stepped out. ‘Do what you need to do then get out.’ With that he spun round and roared off back up the superhighway.

The Outbound Bar. If ever there was a place that suggested refuge and adventure in a barren place then this was it. A neon lit mecca beside a desolate wasteland.

On entering, apart from a few unsavoury looking characters who met my gaze with curious prying eyes, the place felt warm and welcoming.  I became acutely aware of the rules of etiquette when first meeting people here so the thought came to me I should post this blog while I’m here in case I never make it out alive. I wish I had done that now…

So the events below, to the best of my memory, accurately occurred in this order.

I purposely made my way through the saloon where I was met by a confusing array of coloured concoctions in thin bottles in rows behind the bar. I remember seeing wooden barrels on the bar labelled ‘Sporky.’ Typing this word into the VAARR returned ‘A substitute for food. Chop it up, boil it, fry it or use it to stick things together, it always tastes like lukewarm blobs of mucus.’ Not a favorite with my uncle then. Damn it. I was getting hungry. Maybe I’ll order some with a drink?

                                                                                                                           ===========

After I finished my irregular tasting but palatable bowl of Sporky washed down with a drink I was approached by a friendly character who came and sat at my table. I distinctly remember he wore a long dark cape, had piercing inquisitive eyes, no hair and a long pointed nose. At least I never broke the sacred rule three in the Outbound Bar. I was pleased about that.

The extent and detail of our conversation I cannot quite recall. I do however remember feeling very at ease and finding him fascinating as I chatted enthusiastically about the differences between my old home town and The Augmented Star. I can only put this down to the effects the drink was having on me, whatever that was. I know that now.

He said his name was Tobeiche and his kind were known as ‘Shnebs.’ He then announced he needed to check on something and disappeared. Being the inquisitive kind I typed ‘Shneb’ into my VAARR then swallowed hard as I read.

Shneb - There ain’t nothing these creatures don’t know, can’t figure out or fix. They’re super intelligent creatures and very good people to have on your side. Word of warning - Don’t cross or lie to a Shneb. They will see right through you and make your life a living hell.

                                                                                                                           ===========

The next thing I remember was Tobeich returning with a few others of his kind looking very concerned. Then things descended into chaos really quickly... Tobeiche ordered me to get on the floor and covered me over with some kind of shroud. I heard things smashing, loud voices and violence. I don’t quite remember what people were shouting about but I heard my uncles name mentioned a few times and mine I think... Then I heard what I can only describe as sounds of weapons being fired then felt the heat, mild at first then more intense. I knew I had to get out, somehow. I looked from under the shroud and saw turmoil.

I was eventually ushered out of the Outbound Bar via a back exit. I didn’t see where I was going but I felt in safe hands. I heard Tobeiche telling me to keep my head down and move fast. When I eventually removed the shroud I couldn’t believe my eyes. We were in the back of the Sapphire missile shaped vehicle traveling at a speed I dare not guess at.
